The 2015 Rum Challenge Regatta, hosted and organized by the Essex Yacht Club, is an Eastern Connecticut Sailing Association sanctioned event and is one of the five qualifying races for the ECSA’s Long Sand Shoal Cup.
For the last twenty years the Rum Challenge has been known for competitive racing and some seriously enjoyable post-event festivities thanks to Gosling's® Bermuda Rum and EYC's executive chef, Michael Stafford.
The 2015 regatta was sailed in almost perfect conditions with clear blue skies, southeasterly winds of 10-12 knots, waves under 1 ft and great race management thanks to the Race Committee led by the Mystic River Mudheads crew. The 34 starters raced in six classes – two PHRF spinnaker classes, three PHRF non-spinnaker classes and one NEMA multihull class. The spinnaker and multihull classes enjoyed two races and the non-spinnaker classes had one before heading back to celebrate a wonderful day of sailing.
Over 250 sailors and friends attended the post-race awards party held on a beautiful summer evening on the lawn of the Essex Yacht Club overlooking Essex Harbor. Chef Michael’s pulled-pork slider and Essex Red chili were a perfect accompaniment to Gosling’s Dark ‘n Stormy’s that got the crowd prepared for some serious dancing with the Psychedelic 60’s, a local favorite. Commodore Tom Whidden presented the awards which concluded with a drawing among the class winners for a special bottle of Gosling’s Family Reserve sipping rum.
