2017 ESSEX RUM CHALLENGE

The Rum Challenge Ideal 18 regatta was held on July 15. The winds were very light to begin but built as the day progressed providing great conditions for racing on the river. The EYC racers took first and second place in the 10 boat field. Congratulations to Peter Harding and Rick Weiner for placing first, Carter Gowrie and Sue Wyeth for taking second and Tom Atkinson and his son Danny for rounding out the podium. Thank you to all of the racers for getting out in the Ideals and making for a terrific regatta.

The “big boats’ were to have raced on Saturday the 22nd. The weather gods unfortunately had other ideas. Almost 30 PHRF boats made their way to the Sound for racing only to find there weren’t sufficient winds to even start a race. For two and a half hours the intrepid racers braved bathtub conditions while swimming and in one case fishing to fill the time. In the end, the Mudheads were forced to abandon racing for the day. The evening festivities were a smash hit with great food, lots of Gosling rum and of course great music from The Blue Flames Steel Band. While few new stories were provided from the day’s efforts, plenty of stories from the past were dredged-up and retold.

On a personal note, heading up this event was an eye-opening and humbling experience. I am so impressed by the level of commitment by so many of our EYC members and our EYC staff to make the Essex Rum Challenge an event of which we can all be proud. Many-many people and organizations “put their shoulder to the wheel” to make a regatta like this a success. To our racers for their undying faith in the winds, to our Member Supporters and Corporate Sponsors without whom we couldn’t provide this great annual event, to our terrific club management and staff who get the party started right through to the finish and of course to our Volunteers – truly the energy behind the whole event I say a heartfelt THANK YOU!
